are surgeons really just, "glorified mechanics", to quote Scrubs? I know no tv show accurately portrays medicine, but i feel like this line really described my fears about being a surgeon. I really want to be a surgeon because the procedures are interesting, you get to help people and you get to do someone no one else has the chance to do. but im afraid that there will be no diagnosing, because one of the first things that drew me to medicine was that it was like being a detective (once again, taken from Scrubs).

When you get a referral for something, you can't just take their word for it. You need to assess the clinical picture and history, consider the labs and images already ordered, and get anything else needed to confirm the suspected diagnosis / rule out alternatives. Or have your resident do it, I guess.

You'll also be involved in the inpatient post-op care, and followup to assess recovery and/or recurrence (if relevant).

Scrubs is not real life. There's an ongoing joke in medicine that surgeons do without thinking, and medicine doctors think without doing. In neither case is it accurate.
