I just submitted my ERAS this past week.

In terms of LoR, I have two OB and one medicine, and then I was trying to decide who to get to do my last letter. I thought that I might to get my surgery attending to show programs that I have a good surgical background. But my pediatrics mentor had a strong relationship with me and was always very enthusiastic about me. When I asked my Dean of Students, she said that either would be fine. So I picked the Peds writer over the Surgery writer.

Now I am having second thoughts. I have already applied to most programs. But should I still try to get my surgery attending to write me something? Or is it too late? Or not that big a deal?

Any advice would be much appreciated.

i don't think it is a huge deal at all. you have two solid letters from profs in OB, so as long as the third letter is good, you are golden. i think what they are looking for in the letters is more info on you as an intelligent hard worker with a specific interest in the field. outside of the letters from ob/gyn profs, they are not looking for any specific skill set. they are going to teach you surgery. they just want to hear that you are teachable, smart, etc...

Wow, Neilc, thanks for the reply. You have helped put my mind more at ease. Good Luck!

no prob. those are my thoughts at least. i have letters from two ob/gyn and a family practice program director, and i have got interviews already. so, it doesn't appear to hurt at all if you are missing a LOR from a surgeon!

good luck with the match, maybe our paths will cross on the interview trail
