Hello Everyone,
I am a categorical resident. I recently found out that the hospital that I am working at had about $50 Million in losses this year, more then the previous 2-3 years. Many of the ancillary staff have been let go as the hospital can't support them. There are talks of some attending that are also looking to leave due to the situation. Since, I don't see the hospital changing its course in the near future, I feel that the surgery residency program is at risk.
My question is what happens if the hospital shuts down?
Will ACGME help the residents find spots or does the program help find spots?
I know that the categorical residents have funding from the ACGME for the duration of the program, but what does that mean if the program shuts down?
Are the residents expected to secure spots themselves?

This is a very stressful situation for me, I would appreciate it if someone can relate their experiences of such a situation arising in the past.

Thanks

sorry to hear about that, and im sorry i cant really advise you about it. but i do have a more general question on this important topic -- a mentor told me to ask about a hospital's financial condition on interviews (specifically "what's the hospital's bond rating?"). i found this to be too awkward a question during most of my interviews. is there some way to find this information? i've googled to no real avail.

OP, hope things work out.

(Assuming the program is ACGME accredited):
-They're required to have a written statement documenting what will happen to residents if they close.
-An "orphan status" resident will be able to take the remaining funding (from CMS) to a new residency. Provided the closing residency reduces its resident number caps, the accepting programs will be able to increase their caps
-"Good" programs will have PDs call around and do their best to place the residents. Bad programs won't. It's recommended a resident with impending orphan status is proactive in finding places. The RRC won't help; the ACGME may send out letters notifying other programs that a hospital is closing and the residents are being displaced

Of course, the hospital in discussion hasn't closed yet.
