So I shadowed a foot and ankle podiatric surgeon earlier in the week, and I was wondering if anyone else feels super nervous about learning how to perform these surgeries? Or for those that are foot and ankle surgeons how nervous were you, the first time you performed one? 😎

Not a pod yet but I don't see why pods will feel any different than any surgeons doing their first solo surgery?

Also, it's not like you jump right into surgery. You first start out by assisting (holding the re-tractors, suctioning, etc) then you do more stuff as time goes on like closing up the surgical site, placing hardware, etc etc. By the time you are the lead surgeon on a surgery, you would have assisted and seen that same surgery 20+ times.

It was pretty exciting to watch, wasn't it? It sounds like you enjoyed your experience.

Like jonod said, you work your way up to doing surgery on your own. You're not just tossed in there.

When I was working in spine I always talked to the docs about their training days and most had a good story of how terrified they were at first. Don't worry about it til the day comes. You'll be fine...

To add another thought........not everyone wants to perform surgery and not everyone is cut out to do surgery.

Over the years I've known many pods who had excellent training who simply did not want to perform surgery. However, I agree with the other responses. When it's time to fly on your own, you will be well prepared and ready.
