I'm in a bit of a conundrum. Towards the end of my surgery rotation in my 3rd year. I was told that Friday (day after thanksgiving) is "optional" a couple days after being told that med students had to come in that day earlier in the week. A lot of attendings had told me that that day should be off for us even though the hospital is running, but that it was up to the chief resident of my team. Of course we were disappointed in his answer, but the "optional" passive-agressive BS is pissing me off. Someone got the impression that this is like an extra credit opportunity. So I talked w/ other med students on my team, and we're all ok w/ doing what's best for each of us. One's not coming in, one's coming in for morning rounds and some scut and is hoping to leave very early.
So I'm leaving my choice up to what's best for my residency. I'm trying to get into the best EM residency I can. So here's the Q: Is the surgery rotation grade one of the more important grades they look at? I was told by one residency director that internal medicine and ob/gyn were important ones and that there was a 3rd one that she couldnt' remember.
If surg is important, i'll go in, if not, i'll stay home and study.
