I'm sure the questions was asked before but i could not find it. So sorry for repeating it....

I was wondering if any1 could suggest a good reading for surgery self. A lot of ppl say "Surgery Recall," but i feel that it will not be enough. So if any1 has books to recommend, I'd appreciate it a lot. Thanks.

I read Lawrence, but if I were to do it again I would use NMS Surgery.

I didn't like Surgical Recall, although I see why it is popular. I don't see it as a resource for the shelf as much as quick preparation for OR pimping.

Hi Mef,

I took the Surgery shelf end of June (still waiting for score). It was my last shelf, and right after medicine, so I felt comfortable and got done >15min before time. Using Surgical Recall for the shelf exam is not a good idea--that just serves to quick-fix your pimp questions before the OR cases. The shelf is more like the "medical management of surgical patients". It reminded me a lot of the IM shelf, which was still fresh in my mind, but the surgery vignettes were shorter (less co-morbidities).

For the Surg shelf, I used Case Files Surgery and the red NMS Surgery Casebook. Also used Kaplan Surgery notes (2005-2006) and Pestana notes near the end. Hated Lawrence (waste of $$$--I hate long boring textbooks and rarely finish reading a chapter 😴 ) But if you like lots of reference text, use Lawrence for background. I filled in knowledge gaps with good ol' Step Up to Medicine00great ref for all rotations.

For practice MCQ's, I used Kaplan's Qbook, Qbank, Blueprints Surgery Q&A (these were GREAT and fit in your pocket), and a couple chapters of Pretest (could've done more, but alas no time). Remember, don't rely on Recall for the shelf!
