our school recommends lange's current surgical diagnosis & treatment for clerkship reading. any thoughts on this book? should i bother reading it or stick to nms surgery?

For the clerkship part of the rotation (not the shelf), you will be fine with surgical recall + NMS casebook. With these two sources, you will 1) be able to answer nearly all pimp questions you would be expected to know, and 2) actually be able to do the relevant reading because the amount is manageable.

what about the Reid Mont handbook? would it be useful for a 3rd year medical student? or is it only necessary for residents?

Occasionally helpful, but a little too detailed for the clerkship, IMHO. Plus you'll be carrying around Recall anyway.
