Anybody else interested in surgical oncology? Just started my lab year and a couple of fellow lab residents and I decided to do a comprehensive review of surg onc topics over the next few months. We've been doing one topic a week... melanoma, pancreatic cancer, gastric cancer, colon cancer, rectal cancer, etc. At this point, we have begun to realize how much material there is -- so many trials to keep straight, so many new therapies. It is a little overwhelming and there is no single central up-to-date source to highlight which trials are the most important. We're using uptodate, Greenfield, Cameron, Schwartz, and the NCI website.

If there is enough interest, I envision collectively discussing controversial topics, interesting cases, confusing topics, and new trials as they come up... e.g. the MAGIC trial and the recent trial in NEJM on lymphatic mappng for melanoma.

Any takers? If it becomes popular enough, maybe we could pin the thread or have our own sub-forum or something.

I'm seriously considering surg-onc. 👍

hey Boston,

It is very confusing trying to keep all the literature and new papers and trials straight. I find that the textbooks and review papers and still a few years out of date. I found during residency that my staff were a great resource in helping us identify the latest and best articles. We trained our staff to give us residents a copy of any good papers and they discovered them and we did the same for them. Another good resource is the ASCO website - they have all the talks from all their meetings online and most of the talks are referenced so you can pull the original papers.

Good luck with you review on surg onc topics - it's a never ending process!
