Harbor-UCLA Pathology department has an open surgical pathology fellowship position starting in July 2009. The pathology fellow usually serves as "junior attending" meaning she/he signs out surg path cases with residents before they sign out with attendings. The fellow also rotates into the position of chief, handling frozen sections. And there are numerous opportunities for elective rotations throughout the year. Benefits are great because it's L.A. County. Residents are friendly and it's a good environment for people with families. There is a LOT of pathology that comes through Harbor-UCLA and some of it is very advanced. Please go to the link: http://www.harbor-ucla.org/pathology/Fellowship.php
There is another link on that page that gives more specific details on applying. The workload is balanced enough that you would have time to study for boards.

I think you probably mean July 2010. You might also want to mention that they have a hot seat, unless that's what you mean by chief. I'm guessing the 2nd position is already filled.

What am I missing? 16 residency spots and a surg fellowship with only 11,000 surgicals. How does this place even have a program?????? Is there other programs with these kind of numbers?

Where are you getting your numbers from? I don't know about the surgical volume. I interviewed at this program both for residency & fellowship; they don't have 16 residents. They do have 2 SP fellows.

Also, I don't there's a direct relationship between surgical volume & number of fellows. There are larger programs that only have 1. Personally, I think it's a good thing since both are funded.

The numbers come from their website. In my opinion that is not enough specimens to have a residency program. If they have 16 funded spots, a solo practice might as well start their own residency and get 4 spots.

Although 11000 is a bit on the low side I have seen programs with 10 plus residents and a surg path fellow with numbers like that. The fellows maybe acting as jr attendings if they don't have that many attendings.
I still think you can get a decent amount of experience with those numbers. And it really depends on the quality of specimens (complex or simple) not just shear numbers.
