people that got interviewed or who have applied to LECOM for class of 2008, which pathway are you applying for:

1. PBL (problem based learning)

2. LDP (Lecture)

3. ISP (independent learning)

just to get a general concensus on how competitive each of these pathways are. fill in your ballots please

PBL here..

come on guys...start voting...the presidential elections are comin up.. everyone can vote this year...not just FL residents.

Ohhh..if you are in Erie, ALL of you will be attending lectures for the first 14 weeks...even the PBL and ISP students

If you worried about missing material in PBL, I would say relax. After all, you're in a group of 8 or 9 people who are arguably intelligent (since we're gonna be in a med school and all). I'm sure that many people working together can work out the kinks of basic sciences in a case. LDP just requires too much class time, and i am so tired of being lectured at I just want to scream. I've never met a LECOM student who didn't love PBL and was in that pathway.

It all depends on who you talk to...If you talk with an LDP, they will probably say they like lecture...If you talk with a PBL, they will say the love PBL. It all depends on how YOU learn and what is best for you.

Hey Doctortobe-
what learning pathway are you in? This is just s hard decision for me b/c i'm so used to the lecture based learning from undergrad. Also if I'm not mistaken I think the Lecture based gets more clinical experience or a different clinical experience. I was just wondering what you thought. Thanks!

I'm in PBL. If you have any specific questions about it, PM me.

PBL, and Florida for that matter.

It's 12:30 a.m. and I'm drained from reading about bacteria, but I can say that ISP is a great way to go.

I am a second year PBL student, and I can tell you that I am very happy with my choice. If you are a good self directed learner and can manage your time, then you will probably be happy in PBL. In addition, last year's board scores for PBL were statistically significantly higher than those of LDP or ISP. In fact, a PBL student had the third highest score in the country on COMLEX Step 1 last year. If you have any questions about how the program works, I would be happy to answer.

sddoc is correct in those numbers regarding the stats....yet lets take a closer look....
the first class of PBL (now MSIV) 24 students had 2PharmDs and a higher number of students with MSs than the counterpart LDP.
the second class of PBL (now MSIII) also had 2 pharmDs. (LDP had none)
the first class of ISP (now MSIII) of 12 students had 1 FMG who could not match....others with MSs
could this have anything to do with the numbers? Sure, as anyone who has taken the COMpLEX can tell you....pharm and OMM are big.

People....dont let these things fool you into thinking one pathway is better than another.....doctortobee is correct....it is about how you will learn the best....
For me it was LDP, but make it ISP (you get all your notes handed to you, AND skip classes to study)....yes that means breaking the attendence code.

Thanks for the clarification, Stomper. I wasn't trying to state that PBL was better, but I did want to point out that it is competitive with the other pathways. Since the administration doesn't do a good job explaining the pathways to interviewees, many people who choose PBL are quite apprehensive until they get through the first semester. What I was trying to point out with those stats was that, if you choose PBL, you will learn what you need to know to do well on the boards.

Thanks everyone for you replies. I'm really still confused about what pathway I want. Everyone is biased b/c of what they are already in. I do have a question about the exams, I know that the LDP has tests and quizzes frequently. How many tests do PBL have each semester? and when you take the lectures with the LDP do you take the same or different tests? 🙂 thanks guys and lecom class of 2008 are you finding this pathway decision as hard as me!!??

PBL typically has 4-5 tests per semester. When we are with LDP for anatomy and for OMM both years, our tests are exactly the same. Once anatomy is over, we all split and the only thing we share are the occasional supplemental classes(ie, healthcare management or spirituality in medicine) and OMM.

Take care,

Dr_sax

Spirituality....Did anyone not pass that "class"? Do we go to hell if we don't pass or do we have to meet with you know who....

I think your in big trouble if you don't get at least a high B in that class. There aren't many "gimme's" in medical school, but that was one of the easiest tests that I have ever taken!!!😎
