I have a tech at the pharmacy where I intern that constantly swears. She swears by herself, at other coworkers and she has swore at me. I understand that most of the time she is joking but I find it very disrespectful and unprofessional for our setting and I have told her a few times not at swear at me. Other employers enable her to jokingly swear at them but when it comes to myself I am becoming increasingly uncomfortable and frustated with the swearing. Now I don't know how to approach this situation because being an intern I would like to avoid workplace conflicts or having my name attached to any problems. The pharmacy manager at this store is new as well so I don't know how much it would help telling her as she seem not to take anything too seriously. What advice do you guys have? Should i just not mind until I graduate in a year and its time for me to move on or should I tell somebody?

Well i don't really have a problem with her swearing when is directed to other things or people but I have a problem if someone tells me to shut the **** up!

This is retail (you said store)? I just can't imagine customers being happy with the f-bomb all the time (even jokingly). I agree that is very unprofessional :-/
Unfortunately, there may not be much you can do unless the pharmacy manager cares. If you asked her not to cuss at you, that's kind of it. It's best to just suck it up until it's time to leave. Going to the front store manager (my front store manager has written up different pharmacy employees before) would be an option but would definitely be stepping on your PIC's toes.

Most likely it wont be worth it for you. Im going to guess you dont work that many hours per week there and that this specific location is not where you want to work as a pharmacist in the future, so for you it might not be worth it in the long run...

I would maybe consider telling the manager if he/she appears to be an understanding and nice person.

just ride out your internship and move on....when you are the pharmD, then you enforce the clean language rules if you want

You really have two options as an intern.
First, you ask not to be cussed at (which it sounds like you have done).
If it continues you can ignore it or complain to higher authorities. Odds are that there is some company policy (if you work for a big chain/grocery) about language in the workplace. Since it's directed at you it could also be considered verbal abuse. Complaining up the chain would work eventually, but would likely cause you more trouble than you would need. You can also always for a customer to hear and complain and it might stop fast.

The advice to save it until you are in charge is probably sound. However you don't have to ignore it. Continually stating - "Please don't swear at me, I wouldn't rather not hear the language." is the high road that might get your coworker to tone it down and will remind them that there is something valuable about a clean tongue.

So you need to decide how important this is to you. Your company is bound to have policies against cursing and you don't have to tolerate that. It is unprofessional at best and a hostile work environment at worst.

Having said that, escalating something that most people consider no big deal to human resources or field management is going to earn you a certain reputation (not a favorable one). Probable best case scenario, people talk about you behind your back, call you a tale-tall, etc. Worst case scenario, people label you a trouble maker and don't want to work with you or hire you as a pharmacist down the line. Of course it is remotely possible that this language bothers others and they would welcome a little snitching - not likely though.

Only you can decide if the reward is worth the risk. Good luck!

I'd be surprised if your workplace doesn't have a policy against cursing....and even if curse words were tolerated, your workplace certainly would frown on co-workers telling each other to "shut the F up" (at least they should, as that is a hostile work environment.) Still, like others have said, if your manager doesn't care, there isn't a lot you can do. I would try to ignore it (assuming that you feel she is just being verbal, and wouldn't try anything physically against you or anyone else.) Maybe document it in your own personal records, just in case she does start becoming more physically threatening. It really could just be a bad habit she has and she really doesn't mean anything by it....or maybe she is a loose cannon that could cause a lot of trouble.

Probably the best advice. Handling people with poor manners will be a regular occurrence in retail, and if it's a customer who swears HR won't be able to do anything for you. Sure you can ban them from the store, but unless they're really causing an issue you're just making more trouble. Taking the high road is often a good way to handle things.
