Switch from Surgery to EM

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hello everyone,

I'm currently a pgy-1 year in an orthopaedic residency program and am contemplating a switch of careers to be closer to family on the west coast.
I'd like to hear what the possibilities of doing so are, if anyone has heard of a switch for pgy-2 years (or does a different rotations on intern year hinder that)?
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

First thing is that you have to decide you want to do this switch for some other reason.... just to 'be closer to family' is probably not going to cut it for your PDs support or for other programs honestly wanting to take you on...

As far as credit, I think 6 months is the most 'credit' that EM will allow...and that is individualized and will depend on what rotations were done your intern year. I think since you are in a 5 year program, switch to a 3 or 4 year program should be doable as far as the funding set aside for you.

You better get on the ball ASAP, and in all honestly its probably too late, to try to get into this years match.... You might have to wait and try to transfer into a program that happens to have an opening early in the year next year..
