I know this is a self selected group but just out of curiosity.

Do any of you know or heard of anyone (lets keep it annonymous) that left rad/onc for anything else?

I know many people leave other specialties for rad onc but was curious if anyone knows or heard of anyone that left rad onc.

If so what were the reason that you heard of.

Lastly, I know that going from rad onc to heme/onc requires going thru 3 years of internal medicine.

However, if it was possible (for argument's sake) for one to switch to heme onc would anyone do it if it meant that you could somehow have the knowledge and experience to be a heme/onc physician. I'm thinking long term career as an oncologist so let's bypass thinking about the burden of a residency for argument's sake.

I guess the question boils down to if you could overlook the training requirement and was looking as a career as an attending in heme/onc vs rad/onc.

What are the pros and cons of each. Are there elements of heme/onc you wish you could do as a rad onc.

Thank you for the insightful answers.

I've heard of plenty of people switching into rad onc from other specialties (including neurosurg, IM, FP, and heme/onc), but I've never heard of anyone switch out 🙂 (I'm sure it would be quite embarrassing later when they realize what a mistake they made! 😛)

I know of one person who switched from Rad Onc into Pathology. I'm not quite sure of the reason since I never spoke with the person, but I think they may have simply not liked it. Rad Onc is great for those of us who love working with cancer patients and using the cool toys, but it's not for everyone.

I spoke to a resident in Midwest who switched out (into primary care). The reason was: RadOnc is too morbid, too depressing. That is true I guess.

I know of one person who switched out of radonc into radiology. The program he was in was described as pretty malignant at the time & he just didn't want it anymore.
