I begin EM orientation in less than a week in an AOA program. After the match I have found myself really wishing I had done FM instead. To the point it's eating me alive now that I have moved for EM residency.

My contract says I have to give 30 days notice to relieve myself of the contract, they can let me go at anytime. There is an FM program that I like that has 1 open spot, it's an AOA program as well.

So my question is, if I can get out of my EM contract can I be given an FM contract with the AOA for this same year? I know the AOA says if you breach the contract you cannot get another AOA contract for 1 year.

Thanks guys.

Don't know too much about AOA, but purely from a contract perspective, you won't violate yours if you give 30 days notice. Provided they'll have you, it seems like you could just start the FM program near the end of July.

There are generally plenty of open FM spots available. Additionally, since you get 4 years of funding for EM, funding shouldn't be a problem for your future FM position. The question is how to either get out in a way that doesn't harm your current residency and hopefully not taking an additional year in residency. Also, the question is are you willing to go to the places that don't fill.
