Hi:

I was wondering how difficult it would be to switch to IM after having completed a PGY-1 in Family Medicine. Would any credit be given for the coursework completed or or do you have to start Internal Medicine at the PGY-1 level again? Any other concerns involved such as funding etc.?

Does anyone have any experience in this regard?

Thanks

If you complete an entire FM residency, you can get credit for your PGY-1 and start as a PGY-2. Only a PD can apply for the credit, so you have to find someone willing to take you on as a PGY-2.

Funding may be an issue. You will be 50% DME and 100% IME funded for the 2 years of IM residency.

There is no one source for open IM PGY-2 spots. It's a good time to be looking now.

Could you please elaborate on this? Also, is funding an issue if you repeat PGY-1 in another program?

Funding comes from two sources, IME and DME. The length of funding for DME is set by the length of the categorical residency you match into. Anything beyond that length is funded at 50% (this is the case with fellowships).

If it is in the same field, yes. You will be funded for a certain length of residency training; if you switch programs and repeat a year, your last year of residency will be funded at 50%. Some programs will not accept residents without full funding.
