I want to preface this by saying that I don't mean to be ungrateful. I matched into a program that was very low on my list. While I am happy that I have a Rad Onc spot, what are my options switching into a different Rad Onc program at a different institution? Can I sign the waiver before January 15 if I find a spot?

Well, you really should not have ranked it if you did not want to go there. I'd say take a deep breath, enjoy the rest of your MS-4, go through your intern year and then actually start your residency before you try to jump ship.

It would look pretty bad if you tried to get out of a Rad Onc program before even stepping into the department as a resident.

I'm a current PGY2 and I'm happy with my program, faculty, etc. Really nothing to complain about. The only issue is that I'm very far away from family and the geographical area I'd like to end up in. I've recently seen a open spot close to home and the thought of trying to apply for that spot has crossed my mind. I'd not even inquire without talking to my PD and being upfront. My concern is that if I didn't get that spot or didn't go forward with applying for it, just the notion of transferring could create some bad blood. The last thing I want is for my current program to harbor negative feelings if I tried to switch. Anyone have any insight or experiences in this regard?
