Hey all, I'm a sophomore undergrad majoring in computer science. In the middle of last year, I joined a microbiology lab in my university's school of medicine. I thought it would be a good opportunity to do research while building up to eventually a paid position perhaps. I don't see that happening right now. My lab mentor seems to want more undergrads so he can get more done, and I don't even know what kind of a letter he would write me if I asked him. I am considering switching to computer science research this summer after actually contributing something of substance (both for myself and his sake) and was wondering what kind of opinions you guys have. Is getting really good at benchwork and microbiology research helpful in medical school and beyond (I did the same kind of research in high school so it's pretty repetitive)? Will it be a disadvantage to drop out on something I spent almost a year on? I know the common perception is med schools don't really care about your research as long as it's "genuine" first-hand research. Thanks y'all.

I've known multiple people who have switched out of labs or dropped labs. They got their feet wet and experienced research and that was their goal. They all got into great medical schools (they had other things to back themselves up too though).
