My wife is a Pediatrics intern right now. She will be done with her intern year in July 09. If I get in a program in a different state, she would like to move with me and:

1. find another pgy2 peds position

2. take an advanced position in any specialty. We were wondering with which specialties could she use her intern year for, or would she need to re-do internship again for another field like er, optho, rad, gas, pmn&r, etc...

we realize this is all very difficult, so any advice is greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance 🙂

Hey,

Compared to rads optho etc... peds is a lot less competitive.

It would be easier for her transfer into another Peds program. Probably the easiest way is to call the peds program at the hospital you are going to and explain your situation.

Completely changing specialties is another option, but this may require her to do a repeat intern year, espeically if she is joining a surgical specialty which requires one year internship in surgery

Sorry, but I'm not familar with the prelim requirements for the other fields listed above. Someone else may

What specialty does your wife WANT to do? Which one(s) would she be competitive for?
Staying in peds would probably be the easiest, particularly if she likes peds OK.
I'm pretty sure that anesthesia would take a peds year, but I would check with anesthesia program directors and/or the AAMC or ACGME. I'm sure this info is out there but I don't have time to look it up personally. I remember doing a peds rotation as a med student and there was an intern who was going into anesthesiology the next year.
