I am an MSTP student in my second year of medical school looking for labs in which to begin my thesis work at the end of this year. Thus far I have rotated with two PIs and had successful summers in terms of building relationships with the PIs as well as making noteworthy progress on projects. Nevertheless, both PIs are among many at the institution who are having trouble finding funding and I was recently told that I would have to consider another lab altogether because of funding problems. This is after I was discouraged from working with a few other PIs at the school because of their inability to guarantee solvency in the coming years.

I am now wondering if it would be possible for me to to look for labs at neighboring schools/research institutes to do my thesis work (without upsetting the higher-ups). Has anyone had any familiarity with trying something like this (especially within the framework of an MSTP)? Any suggestions?

Thanks

You'd have to ask the higher ups, but typically this is not allowed. If they are paying for your medical school, they will tell you to do research within your medical school.
