Do any of you use synthetic RBC's for transfusion? Ever seen them used? We had a rep come to the hospital today and was explaining their proposed utility. Lit search wasn't conclusive either way.

I've read about non PRBC oxygen carriers, but not synthetic RBC's......you mean little 5 to 10 micron man made spheres designed to carry oxygen?

Yes, they were described as perflourocarbon (?) entities that offer perfusion with no need to cross-match blood and wouldn't need to be stored frozen, and would be available without need for blood donation.

Just wondering if any had seen them used. The rep said they were approved for angioplasties...

They are not "synthetic red cells"...they are emulsions of fluorocarbons...the same type used in liquid ventilation in ARDS...same as those conceptually shown in the "Abyss".

I thought you were talking about something BRAND new.
