OKSU's website states that it "recommends" purchasing a tablet pc, and that in the future it will even require having one. I have thought about getting one anyway because I really like the idea of being able to handwrite notes and then have them converted to text. Plus, it seems like it would be much easier to keep everything organized and save paper. I was just wondering if anyone has used a tablet pc for class before, and what brand they feel would be the best. So far I am leaning toward the Fujitsu lifebook but would like some input from students who actually use a tablet pc.

The classes of 2011 and 2012 here at Iowa State were required to purchase the Fujitsu Lifebook. It's not a bad little computer....nice size for hauling around all day. I broke the latch and cracked the case on mine, but we were also (conveniently) required to purchase a warranty on it, so there was no problem getting it fixed. My biggest problem has been with the WebCT/Blackboard program we have to use here and occasionally when I try to print it says the printer configuration isn't right, but all that needs is a restart. All in all I'd say its a good computer, however, I am bitter about being forced to shell out an extra $2500 on top of tuition and fees for it. 👎

Good luck!

My school will give you financial aid if you buy a gateway, but after reading about their poor performance I will for sure stay far away.

You can still get financial aid even if you don't by the gateway though. They just recommend it b/c OSU has a contract with Gateway and apparently they give an okay discount. You can take out up to a certain amount in financial aid to purchase a tablet, any kind you want!

Oh, well I did not know that. The hardest part is going to be picking one, it is so much money to spend that I would hate to choose the wrong one. I suppose it would help if I knew something about computers lol.

OKState has a contract with Dell so there is a discount, but it's only a discount. You still have to pay for it... but Dell makes good computers I think, better than Gateway. (I'm like 90% sure it's Dell and not Gateway. Perhaps you have more than one option... but I know Dell is offered...)

By the way, hi, I'm Rhiannon, and I totally got my rejection letter from OSU today. LOL. I work in the hospital itself though so I kind of know what's going on... just apparently not enough to get in!! 😡 Oh well.

I guess I can answer questions about the school, just don't ask me advice on getting in. 😛

OKSU may have a better deal, but I (and several others in our class) got a Lenovo X61 tablet and it's pretty awesome. I'd definitely recommend sticking with Windows XP as Vista was a nightmare (and still is sometimes).

What kind of speed and battery power does the lenovo have? I read that the Fujitsu has great battery power but doesn't function well as a tablet. I don't know much about computers so any information is helpful.

At Davis we have to purchase either a Macbook pro or a Toshiba Portege Tablet. I have the tablet and love it. We have computer folks who offer full-time support, so we have help if there are any problems. Some people in my class have had different issues, but my tablet hasn't given me that much trouble. I'm almost completely paperless and love having all my notes in one place.
