I have a simple question. I resigned from residency very recently. I do not plan to go back to practicing medicine in any capacity. I wanted to know if I needed to purchase tail coverage to protect myself after I voluntarily resigned from my program.

Like severance from any job, it depends.

If your programs policy is an "occurance" policy, it will cover you forever for any actions done while under it. No tails are ever necessary.

On the other hand, if your program's policy is a "claims made" policy, the answer is, "it depends." You will certainly need a tail in that case, but who pays for it is an open question. I've never heard of a residency program requiring its graduates to pay for a tail (that would be absurd) but I have no clue what the general feeling is for people that resign. To be honest though, I still highly doubt you'd have to cover your own tail.

Basically, the only way to know would be to contact your former programs GME office and ask.
