I was curious to know if people were planning on taking their step I at a different location besides their med skool, and for what reasons they are doing so.

i'm thinking about taking mine at "home" so i can benefit on my mom pampering my lazy azz during crunch time....i dunno what do you guys think? MAMA's BOY?

I've thought about that too... might be easier to get work done without many friends around (nobody lives there anymore), as well as getting free meals and all. Probably have to decide fairly soon, though, wouldn't we? I might want to look into this issue further.

that's my plan too. 🙂

My brother did it at home and was convinced this was his saving grace! I'm not sure if I will because I will be w/out a car if I go home, and I study at the library (I'm a library dork). It would be nice having free food though....

I think I'll be going home as well since Montreal has a USMLE test site. Would anyone really not recommend this? I want to keep sane during that stressful period, and I think being shut up alone in my apartment would make things worse. Plus with no one watching it's so easy to waste time online (like now!) or watching TV. And of course free meals and laundry is a bonus. 🙂 I'll just have to make a deal with my younger brother to minimize distractions like loud music, but he'll be 17 by then and should understand. As long as the suitcase with study materials doesn't get lost... 😱

My mom was trying to get me to do this. Pretty funny since I'm a non-trad. I think she just wants to see me more (she's about 3000 miles away).

Even if it was something I was considering, I still think I'd stay at school. I feel like I have my study routine figured out--where I study best, what types of snacks to keep on hand, etc. In addition, all my friends will be around and we are planning to have mini-study groups to keep ourselves on track. I also have MANY books that would be really hard to take somewhere else and I would hate to want to look something up and realize I left my book at my apartment. But that's just me. I guess since I'm a bit older, I feel like this is my home and that other place is my parents' home. When I go to my parents' home it's time for vacation!!! 😉

I did my 6 weeks of board studying at home and I am so glad that I did. I wound up sneaking into a local community college every day and using their classrooms (as school was out of session in late may, early june). Nobody ever bothered me and I never had to run into another stressed out med student studying for the boards.

i studied at home...i planned my exam for the end of summer, and i am always home in the summer, so it worked out well. but, i would have made it happen that way no matter what. i had a great state uni to use, which was pretty empty over the summer. i was able to work a couple nights a week, get fed by my mom, golf with my dad, etc. just wound up feeling good about life, which was how i wanted to go into the exam.

i would take it wherever you can concentrate the best and feel the most comfortable.

This is brilliant and I think I will employ this tactic. I was getting worried about studying with all the other stress cases, not to mention the high possibility of screwing around. Going to a place where no fun could ever happen, without a computer or TV would FORCE me to focus.

actually the computer thing is something i'm worried about....i think i'll need to use it alot but my brother plays on it all day and the computer is in his room....

My parents just bought a new computer which is now in my room (the unofficial office when I'm not home). That could cause conflicts with my brother, but I do have the option of loaning him my laptop if he just wants to go online...we'll see.
