I had to take a medical leave for the first of the three rotations of my third year (med and surg) I'm returning to do psych/neuro/FP in the winter and OB/peds in the spring. Obviously, I will have to do the med/surg rotation at the beggining of next year to finish my third year. This will obvious give me a late start towards 4th year and will lead to me sitting out the '05 match. My grades are solid, Step 1 of 244/99. Since I won't get my degree until after August '05, will there be any harm in just waiting 8 months and enertering the '06 match? I'm leaning towards path, rads, nuclear med, peds, psych. If any has any advice of has been in such a situation, please let me know!

Thanks!

There's a guy rotating with me in psych right now in a similar position. His wife had medical problems and he sat out the first 4 rotations last year and is finishing up 3rd year. He wants to match in radiation oncology and plans on doing research to fill in the time gap. I don't think any of the residency programs will care about the time you needed off, especially if it is unrelated to academic problems. Since you're interested in some technical areas of medicine maybe the extra time in research can be useful in matching. Or maybe you can use the time to do some additional externships in the programs you want to match into.

Thanks for the reply, it's always good to hear that you're not the only one!
