Hello all,
I am a recent college graduate. I had planned on applying this cycle, but had several relatives die unexpectedly at the end of the school year which made it very difficult to take time for applications.

For context, I have about 2600 hours of clinical experience already. I have worked as a CNA/EKG tech, and as a scribe.

Currently, I’m a CNA in a hospital going through major turmoil, Union strikes, Major understaffing, etc. I’m burnt out, underpaid and really just past the point of gaining anything from this position. I love taking care of patients, but the overall environment is taking a huge toll on me.

I am considering working a non-clinical job for a while. I’m taking a few more classes this upcoming semester, so I would also be doing that and volunteering.

Would it look bad to suddenly stop working in a clinical environment? I am trying to save up for applications etc and I could be making $5 more in a non clinical job.

I also have research experience and have considered working as a research assistant but for the time being I’m registered for classes here, and can’t move until they are over. I have a few interviews for this as well.

I appreciate your respectful opinions. I am not trying to come off as lazy, or unmotivated. When I started this job we had safe staffing and better working conditions and it’s to the point now that I am dreading going to work and in pain afterwards from the heavy work I do lifting people, etc.

I am sorry for your loss. I hope everything turns out ok for you.

On the note of clinical, you have enough. No one will bat an eye if you do not have clinical job experience during your gap year. In your final year before application (depending on the number of gap years) it might benefit you to throw in a couple hours a week of clinical volunteering just to demonstrate continued clinical interest, however you have a sufficient amount of clinical.

Thank you for your kind words, I was thinking about volunteering in a hospice facility. My grandpa was terrified of dying alone and while he had us there for him, it really made me sad thinking about how many people don’t have anyone.
