I am trying to decide whether or not to take a leave of absence from my post bacc. I have been struggling with severe mental health issues that I have sought help for and medications are helping but I still feel overwhelmed at times and unable to perform to my full potential. I have been going back and forth with this decision for about a month now but can't bring myself to just walk away. Unfortunately, there is only 6 weeks left in my semester and taking a leave of absence would likely push me back an application cycle but I also know post baccs do not have room for bad grades any semester so I am very unsure of what to do. Please help 🙁

Definitely do whatever you need to do to take care of your mental health, even if it means you won't be adequately prepared to apply by next cycle. It might be a good idea to reach out to your professors, or an advisor of your program, to explain your situation and see what your options are.

You are correct that getting subpar grades defeats the purpose of a post-bacc; getting a string of B's or lower in your program could possibly tank your chances from both MD and DO schools. Is it too late to withdraw from these classes? What are your UG GPA and current postbacc GPA? Also, is this a formal or a DIY postbacc?

Well a medical leave would show up as a string of withdrawals stating it was a LOA which my advisors said I could then explain or they could address in my LOR. My UG is around a 3.5 from a top 15 school, and my post-bacc is around a 3.7.

IO fear that if you try to bulldoze your way through given you metal health issues, you'll end up crashing and burning academically, and also displaying poor judgment to Adcoms.

So, take the LOA now and go heal. Show us that you make good choices.
