I'm in a linguistics class which I absolutely hate right now. Initially I took it as a free credit that also counted towards a minor I've since dropped, meaning it currently has no more value than a single credit that counts towards graduation.

To make things worse, I scored really poorly on the last exam worth 20% of my grade. It's due to my own neglect as well as being unable to allocate enough time to the course because all of my other exams and several other projects were during the same week too. Basically, my grade was a victim of my hell week. (I was over a standard deviation away from the mean). On the bright side 50% is on homework assignments and I am doing very well in those and 30% is on a final paper. But the class is curved and I'm sure I'm around the bottom of the curve now.

I'm considering taking the W, but given that I'm trying to recover from a freshman year where my sGPA was below 3.0 (currently I have low A-s/high Bs in my science classes this semester but I can definitely improve that to all As by semester's end) I'm extremely hesitant to do so because I'm concerned it will look bad, but my interest in the class has plummeted completely because I've become so disinterested in the material and the professor. Opinions?

Will this be your first W? If so, take the W. Since you already had a horrible freshman year, you need to maintain a high GPA. Take the W this time but be sure to ace all other classes going forward. -

It would be the first W. Thanks for the advice.

Also, if I have B-s in introductory bio courses but proceed to score As/A-s for the upper bio courses would the B-s be completely overlooked?

bump

Someone said this would pretty much ruin my chances at top 20 schools, and while I know it's already a long shot to even be accepted into schools of that caliber I still don't want to be restricted in choosing places to apply after just my sophomore year...
