Here is my 2010-2011 academic year (my 5th year):

Fall 2010: withdrew, with 5 W's.
Spring 2011: not taking any course.

I'll be applying this year (2011-2012 cycle), and I'll return to full time study on September 2011.

Would this look bad even if I do productive things during my time off from January 2011 until September 2011?

Would it be better to take at least one course this semester (Spring 2011) instead of not taking any? Or wouldn't it matter at all?

You'd have to be able to explain why you took the year off, or have been really productive with the year off.

probably not as bad as your 5 W's
unless there's a legit reason

My reason is that I want to use the timeoff to sort out my problems and recharge. Would this still be frowned upon?

Probably in your situation it wouldn't be a bad idea. You don't want to have another 5 W's from not being able to stay focused on school this semester. Good luck! 🙂
