I'm very interested in applying for MPH programs (focusing in international/global health) but haven't yet taken any classes in public health - my background is in poli sci and sociology.

Would anyone recommend taking an intro class at George Washington as a non-degree student (if this is even possible) to see if I really want to pursue my MPH? I wouldn't hesitate except that GW is soooo expensive and I think the only other school IN DC with an international health grad program is George Mason and while that would be much cheaper it's not quite as convenient to me.

Thanks for any advice. Sorry for the super long post!!

It's great that you're considering public health. Are there any public health related classes at your current institution? It would be an interesting experience to take a class at GWU, but I don't think the cost is worth it. Doesn't GWU have one of the highest tuititions in the nation as well as alumni who aren't too happy about it?

If you want to learn more about public health, buy a book or check one out at the library. You can also check out www.apha.org which is the website for the American Public Health Association. If you're still interested, experience is key for winning over your school. Good luck!

Thanks for the advice. I think I might have to go the book and volunteering route to get some info and experience. I got my BA in 06 so I have no current institution, and I work full time but I think being in DC I should be able to find some volunteer opportunities.

I'd really like to take some kind of intro class, but GW is so very expensive and I have heard some not so great reviews of their program.
