I am a non-traditional student currently enrolled in biochemistry through my post-bacc program. I applied to medical school this cycle and have been accepted at three schools—two that require biochemistry and one that does not. For family reasons, I will most likely attend the school that does not require biochemistry, but the door for the other two schools is not yet totally shut. So I am committed to remaining in my biochemistry class until the decision is truly made. My question is: should I stay in the class even if I don’t strictly need it? I have heard that biochemistry is one of the more directly applicable pre-req classes, but the class meets late at night (6:30-9:30) and I drive a long way to get there.

Biochemistry is very helpful for medical school - if you have the time and energy to learn the material this semester, you should certainly do so. Almost everyone else will have the background and most first year medical school curricula assume at least basic knowledge of biochem. First year med school is hard enough without being behind the eight ball to start. Moreover, should you decide on one of the other medical schools that require it, you will be very happy you have taken it this semester.

If your schools let’s you drop it then you can. It’ll be helpful but you can take it in med school.

What scares me about taking extra classes before matriculation is that what if you happen to do badly in it and end up getting your acceptance rescinded? Why take that chance when you dont have to?

You also see if any school that has accepted you, including the one that doesnt require biochem, does have a clause about successfully completing any current academic pursuits which could include the class you are in.

Thanks, that didn't occur to me. Will definitely check before I make any changes
