Hello all! I'm applying to medical school this cycle, but I'm asking this question for someone else who's also applying. She has 3.5 GPA and is studying for the MCAT (prospectively in August). She's curious to know whether or not her new GPA during her final year will be considered although she is applying with a 3.5 GPA this cycle.

Thanks in advance!

I believe you need to send in a final transcript the final year if accepted to a school to show that you maintained your grades.

Also, she is taking the MCAT in August and applying this cycle? That's quite the feat there, you're guaranteed less secondaries making schools wait for scores like that. I'd suggest that you suggest telling her to wait next year to apply.

Tell her, "DO NOT APPLY WITH AN AUGUST MCAT UNLESS YOUR PACTICE SCORES RANGE ABOVE A 37, YOU'VE HAD A LOT OF AMAZING AND UNIQUE EXPERIENCES, AND YOU PRE-WRITE ALL ESSAYS."

It will be a royal waste of time.

Tell her to apply next cycle. She'll receive her scores in September and will submit a very late app.

What about end of July mcat?

Terrible idea.

You really do need to get the timing right to maximize your chances. Medical school is rolling admissions, you should have your app complete absolutely as soon as possible.

Survivor DO

So SurvivorDO, are you saying that her senior year classes, hopefully increasing her GPA, do not matter? Medical schools only care about the GPA that is submitted?

Didn't seem like he said anything similar to this

But basically they only care about the GPA that is submitted, you can send letter of updates etc but you will have already submitted secondary's before receiving fall semester's grades, and you overall GPA they look at is by far the most important.

But to echo other people's sentiments, she really should not be applying with such a late MCAT.

bump

I've gotten pretty good input, but any med students out there kind enough to offer their experience? Thanks!
