I'm not taking a heavy courseload this summer. I'm a sophomore (second semester). I'm planning to take Orgo II in the Fall.

Aside from that, I've taken most pre-req courses.

Wanted to ask,

Would it be a good idea to take a shot at the DAT this summer? It would be my first time taking it. My thinking is, if I don't do as well as I wanted, I can always retake it in the Winter or Summer before filling out applications.

I'll still have self taught myself many Orgo II concepts and it'll help me do well in the Fall for when I take the course.

My only issue is - if i don't take the DAT this summer, I'll end up taking it next summer & be forced to submit an application (early) without my scores returned, which leaves the risk of sending poor scores over.

I'd highly recommend against it. Although orgo is arguably the easiest of the sciences on the DAT, a lot of it is orgo 2 material.

I did it and did fine on the Orgo section just by studying the Orgo II material. I only did this because I couldn't take Orgo II until my senior year though. If you're only a Sophomore I don't see any reason you can't wait until next winter or early next summer to take the DAT.

Why wouldn't you just take it in the winter instead?
Orgo2 honestly doesn't make too much of a difference on the DAT. All it helps with is lab techniques and a little bit on the bio section.
The majority of OC on the DAT is covered in orgo1; reactions.

I would say as long as you cover the material by watching vids and doing practice problems, it's doable, but I'd say it would serve you a lot better if you actually took the course, then you would have much more comprehensive understanding and the actual test will feel pretty easy.
