Hey all, was hoping to get some advice about something...

I am a PhD student from an APA-approved clinical psychology program and am currently completing an APA-approved internship in California.

I am hoping to get the EPPP done and out of the way ASAP, so I submitted an application for licensure as a Master Level Psychologist in Kansas, as I was told that this would enable me to take the EPPP early while on internship (vs having to wait until internship was done in CA). My application was approved and I can now sit for the EPPP. However, I just wanted to confirm: Provided that I receive a 500 or above on the EPPP (which I am taking through "supervised practice" in Kansas), will I be able to transfer my EPPP score from Kansas to California for my license as a psychologist?

I figured I might as well double check and make sure someone else has done this before without any significant problems, as it would be a living nightmare to have to re-live the EPPP trauma all over again...

Thanks in advance!

I know someone who did this and it seemed to work well for her. She was able to get a job that she wouldn't have been able to otherwise, in fact.

I think it's a great idea if you can manage it. I have never heard of someone taking the EPPP and not being able to use their score in another state. As far as I'm aware, as long as your score is in your licensing state's passing range, you only have to pass once. The only exception I can think of would be if you took it many, many years ago for some reason and wanted to use it for a new application.

Even though I'm pretty sure about this, I encourage you to call and verify with the licensing board. California has additional state-specific requirements for licensure, so it will be good to clear the EPPP hurdle and get a jump on the rest.

I am in the process of doing so -- and will let you all know what/when I hear (Kansas didn't know the answer; waiting on California) -- but in the meantime I was wondering if anyone on the forum had taken the EPPP as a "masters level psychologist" and then transferred the score for a doctoral level license, especially in California. My concern was that given that there are lower EPPP score requirements for masters level licenses, this could create some type of problem. Always good to make sure!

Generally not a concern as long as you actually scored what the state that you will be licensing in has set as their passing score for doctoral level.

Hi,

I realize this thread is old. I also will be beginning internship in California this year and am hoping to take the EPPP while I’m there so that I can get an early start with getting licensed there. Were you successful getting your score transferred from Kansas to CA during internship?

Will you be taking it in California? CA doesn’t allow sitting for the EPPP until you submit your postdoc hours.

I’m looking to do something similar as the OP and take the EPPP in another state that allows me to do it prior to fellowship and then transfer my score to CA - so that’s why I was wondering how it went for OP in getting their score transferred from Kansas to CA

Ah okay, just clarifying because it sounded like you were planning to go through CA’s state board.

It shouldn't be an issue. I had a few colleagues who did this specifically with Kansas. You'll just have to pay the EPPP transfer fee for each specific state, and won't be issued a license until you have completed what is required for that state you're getting licensed in (application, payment, pre- & post- doc hours, EPPP, jurisprudence exams, etc.).
