Hi!

I’m a post back premed student taking my science prerequisites at a local university. My original plan was to take a full year of general chemistry with labs this summer and then orgo during the 2024-2025 school year. Summer gen chem proved to be too difficult for me though: I hadn’t been in school in quite some time and I did poorly on the first two quizzes (I also suspect that many students in the class took AP Chemistry in high school). I did, however do better on the first exam (which tests on the same material as the quizzes) but not enough to warrant me staying in the class (and the professor wasn’t willing to work with me in terms of giving me extra credit or dropping the lowest quiz or something) so I dropped it. I decided to stay in the lab for summer gen chem 1 though as it’s going well and everything is take home (midterm, lab reports, final).

I obviously can’t take gen chem 2 lecture this summer, but the university will allow me to take the gen chem 2 lab if I want to. I should also mention that I am still going to class even though I dropped gen chem 1 and will probably audit gen chem 2’s lecture as well. So what do you think: is it a smart idea to take the gen chem 2 lab without taking the lecture? It will make next school year a whole lot less stressful, but I don’t know whether it is a smart idea or not.

If it's not a co-requisite, it may help you with scheduling your study time??? You know you better. Just don't burn the lab down.
