Would I be a late applicant if I took the July MCAT and applied this cycle? I am planning to complete my AMCAS application in early June so it gets verified but take the MCAT in mid-July.

Thanks

That is next cycle, but yes, you would be a bit later than the earliest you can be. Mid-Aug would be when it got to schools which isn't terribly late, but is later than them getting it in July.

I took the July MCAT but was complete with AMCAS in June. I completed all of my secondaries early as well so that I was "complete" at schools and all they needed was my score. I got my first 2 invites within a week or 2 of my score being released. I don't think it's late to still be considered "early" at schools...but if you don't do well and need/want to retake it's a bit late.

I also think it depends largely on the school...I have a friend from Texas who received an invite super early and was interviewing in July. Most of the schools I applied to and interviewed at didn't interview until End of August/September.

No, it is not too late as long as you submit your primary early so that it is verified by the time your MCAT scores come out. I took the MCAT in August of last year and am currently going through the application process. I applied to 20 schools. I have received 12 interview invites so far, went to 8 of them (decided to withdraw from 4 post interview invite) and already have three acceptance from some great schools. Sorry if that came out sounding like bragging, but I just wanted to give you some supporting evidence to show that July MCAT is not too late as long as you do well on it and have your primary completed and verified by the time your MCAT scores come out.

You should also look at whether a lot of the schools to which you plan on applying screen their applicants before sending secondaries. In that case, it's not doing you any favors having to wait till mid August for MCAT results. So if you're say, a California resident, I would try to take my MCAT sooner rather than later. If most/all of your prospective schools make their secondaries available to everyone, I don't think you should have any real issues if you have your amcas verified in june as you intend.

Is there a reason you can't take it in May? That's still 10+ weeks away which is plenty of time to study IMHO...unless of course you have 20 credits this semester, then it might be kinda hard to fit in MCAT studying as well.

Taking it in July is fine, but you don't really have a chance to re-do. So if you're the type that knows they can nail it, go for it.

If not, try and take it earlier.

If all else fails, take it, then continue to study adding in your experience. When you get the results either cancel the test or try again wiser, faster, stronger.

If it's possible for you, take it in June. I took it at the very end of July, and while this cycle worked out fine for me, the process was really nerve-wracking because I didn't have any safety net in terms of time - by the time I got my scores back at the beginning of Sept, my AMCAS was verified and I had written (although not submitted) most of my secondaries. It's tough to move ahead with other parts of the application process - ie, write secondaries - when you're worried about your scores...and believe me, no matter how well you do, almost EVERYONE walks out feeling like they bombed it. Do yourself a favor, study early, and try to take it in June or at the very latest early July.

I have some friends who took the july mcat and it really hurt them, they didnt like their scores and couldnt retake. + i was already filling out secondaries by then. they couldnt even get verified.

I took a mid-July MCAT and was successful this cycle - in fact I had some earlyish interviews and got my first acceptance in October. Just make sure you study adequately because you don't want to have to retake it. If you're not going to use the extra study time wisely, take the test earlier.
