Hi, I will be graduating from college in 2016. I wish to go straight to med school without taking a gap year. As all of you probably know, we would be the first class to take the new MCAT2015. However, according to AAMC, the current exam will be administered for the last time in Jan 2015. I personally prefer the old MCAT, so I plan to take the MCAT in January 2015, which is right after the winter break of my junior year. That way, I'll have the whole winter break to study. I'll also study during the summer before my junior year, because I heard that you need to study for at least 2 months in order to have a solid score on the MCAT. What do you think of my plan?

I think it could work. I am assuming you are correct about the January MCAT being the old one. It would suck to study for the wrong test.

I'll be done with all the prereq by my 2nd year. Should I just spend the whole summer between my sophomore and junior year studying for the MCAT (possibly taking a Kaplan or Princeton class, if necessary) and then take it at the beginning of my junior year? That way if I do not do well the first time I can take it again in January 2015, the last time the current test is given. Of course I hope to only have to take it once, but I just want to avoid the new MCAT2015 at ALL COST. Advice please?

Study throughout the semester... You don't want to have to retake since you'll be taking it the last time for the old mcat. Could you take it earlier so if you did retake it'd be the old one?

the sucky thing would be having to do a retake, but your retake would be the new mcat which would be like starting from scratch... try taking it sept 2014 just to get a feel then retaking it jan 2015 to play safe so you know what to expect

Yeah, I don't usually recommend taking the MCAT when you aren't ready, but the new 2015 one sounds like a beast.

I'd try to take 2 of the old ones.

The ugly thing is that if I decide to take the MCAT before the summer of my junior year, I cannot take a gap year. If for some reasons I have to take a gap year, then my MCAT score would expire and I have to retake the new one🙁

Yes, I basically plan to play it like this🙂

As I think about my plan, I realize that there is a major downside: I won't have any upper-division science courses under my belt for the MCAT. I heard that Biochem and Physiology help a lot on the MCAT. What do you guys think of that?

We are the same year and this is my plan. Because if one were to get a bad score on the pre2015 mcat, it would suck to have to take the new mcat and then get a bad score because the new mcat is more difficult.

I think upper division classes would help if you didn't take general biology in undergrad because you passed out of it via AP credits.

If you took general biology in undergrad then I think that would be enough since you already learned about cell biology, molecular biology, physiology, and genetics. However, I think biochem would be helpful too.

guys I need a Mcat study partner for the Jan23rd exam
is anyone looking for a study partner too ?

are you registered? I can't seem to find any january dates that aren't full already!

Hey everybody!! Good luck, and God bless to those who are indeed taking the test on this date!! For those who are scheduled to take the test on this date and have a change of heart or have friends that are having a change of heart, I'm asking if you'd contact me on here and let me know as I'm doing my best to gain a spot to take the MCAT in January 2015. If you can let me know before you cancel your test date, we could set it up so that when you cancel I'm potentially there to fill your spot on AAMC's test scheduling site. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!
