Does it hurt you to take your MCAT more than once? For ex, lets say you get a 10 or 20 the first time, and the second time you score a 38, do they average out the two scores or just see the second one?

They see it as many times as you take it. The only way you can take the exam and not have a school see your score is if you void the exam at the end of it...but this also means that you won't see your score either.

An 18 point jump would be great. I doubt any medical school would even bat an eye as to your qualifications in terms of the MCAT. They would probably understand the first score as a fluke and attribute it to bad testing conditions, personal problems, possibly seriously under prepared, etc.

The important thing is to recognize that it's fair game for the schools to ask you why you scored so low the first time. As long as you have a reasonable answer for that, it shouldn't matter.

Taking the MCAT more than 3 times, though, things start to look kind of bad, though...

3 or 4 times is OK. try not to go above 3 times.

The majority of schools look at your newest score, some look at your best score, and a minority average your scores together (I'm thinking of GWU).

the blind leading the blind...if you legitimately get a 10 on a real MCAT then there's no chance in hell you're one day going to magically get a 38, ever. Also, 4 times? lol.....

Do yourself a favor and avoid taking it until you're consistently scoring 2-3 pts higher on practice tests than what you want on the real thing. Then you only have to take it once.

Some even take the best scores in each section, like Tufts. Theres a few more but I can't think of them right now.
