Taking NBDE before it goes pass/fail

Hi everyone, I'm a second year dental student. I want to specialize in oral surgery, so do you think its a better idea to take boards in December before they go pass/fail or not? I am ranked top 10 in my class at the moment but having a board score might be advantageous when applying to OMFS programs. I've also heard that OMFS is going to be using NBME, which I don't want to take if I don't have to. Thank you in advance for your insightful opinions in this manner.

HOWEVER, take into consideration the fact that residency programs may make NBME scores a requirement to matriculate into any program in 2014 (When this would largely be effective), even if you already have a prior (stellar) NBDE score.

Moreover, the NBME might be viewed as a new and essential diagnostic factor from the perspective of medical school admissions/6-year programs as it directly correlates to USMLE Step 1 performance. Of course, the biomedical knowledge of a dental student will not likely surpass that of a 2nd year medical student as it pertains to the Steps, but this will likely be taken into consideration regardless.

Obviously this has yet to be worked out. just personal thoughts 😎

Do you know when the NBME will take effect (assuming its a done-deal)? I thought it will take sometime to implement, like, its not going to happen in the same time period (next year) when NBDE goes p/f

difficult to precisely say, but logic would follow that this policy would take effect at a point that correlates for applicants w/ P/F scoring on the NBDE part 1 (i.e. dental students for the c/o 2014-ish). Generally speaking, the c/o 2013 would be the last class with graded scores (this assumes that their boards were takin after 2nd year) so this would probably not apply for them. For the c/o 2014 who took their boards after 1st year, this puts them in a grey zone.....they could end up getting boned if programs require an NBME score regardless of having an NBDE score.

the AAOMS just had their annual meeting, and this was one of the topics. It is likely that official information will become available in the coming weeks.

I've heard that even though the NBDE1is P/F IT IS STILL SCORED.😱 The residency programs will still receive the numerical scores without the applicant knowing what it is - though I would assume the school would tell them if they inquired. The scores can't be high with a new template... Should be interesting

based upon my interpretation of the Joint Commission's ruling, this is not true.

"The implementation of Pass/Fail reporting for candidate performance on National Boards will take effect on January 1, 2012. After that date, passing candidates will receive the status of Pass, “P”, while failing candidates will receive raw score information for each discipline with the status of Fail, “F”."

"The dental school profiles will be discontinued on January 1, 2012 when score reporting on the National Board examinations becomes Pass/Fail."

"Score reports effective 1/1/12: Por F… no numerical score unless candidate tested prior to that date."

i doubt they will keep track of numerical scores.


isn't the point of switching to a P/F system to prevent residency programs from using the results?

kind of pointless to go through this trouble if they're secretly going to score applicants.
