Hi guys 🙂

I just have a quick question. I'm currently a senior and I'm applying for the upcoming year. However, I have not finished my biochem, microbiology, and anatomy requirement yet. I was wondering if I could take these classes the summer after my senior year assuming that I cannot complete these requirements DURING the school year and assuming that I do get into optometry school (yes i know-- big assumption). Hopefully, that made sense...I know it's ...a long run-on sentence haha.

Thanks in advance!

You should contact the schools you are applying to but I would imagine that it would be HIGHLY unlikely that you would be offered admission if you had that many prerequisites outstanding. Most schools will interview and make an offer of admission of you still have one, MAYBE two to complete and make your offer contingent on getting a certain grade but in reality, most optometry school pre-requisites are not that onerous, consisting mostly of first and second year science courses and as such, most students have them completed well in advance of applying.

But again, contact the schools.

I agree with KHE; you should contact the schools but if you're taking them in the summer, it will probably be too late. If you were taking them this fall and upcoming spring you'd be fine, in that you'd likely get a conditional acceptance, but they can't really offer you that if you're going to take them over the summer (especially 3). If worst comes to worst, you can always delay your application cycle a year (many, including myself, did this). But again, contact the schools directly and see what they say.

Thank you guys for your quick reply.

So, I was also wondering, lets say I note on my application that I DO plan on finishing these classes during fall/winter/spring quarter. Is it going to affect my chances of getting in -- even though I have not finished them now? I know you said 1 or 2 unfinished pre-reqs would be fine.........but do you think 3 unfinished pre-reqs could hinder my chances tremendously?

It will definitely hinder your chances because they are far more likely to waitlist you if you have 3 outstanding pre-reqs, and then you wouldn't be able to have grades sent to them for those until what, late May? (depending on your school) That's what would most likely happen, and by then it would just be quite difficult to get off the waitlist. I'm not at all saying you won't get in, but yes your chances will be hindered.

And again, it is incredibly common to take at least a year off before starting optometry school, so don't worry if that does end up happening, you'll still be fine in the end.

If you have good grades and a strong OAT score they might allow you to be admitted for the fall of 2010. They would probably just tell you they have to be completed by the start of school in august.
