Wow on that last paragraph, it is scary that this poster is on an interview committee, talk about being judgmental.

That is your job when on an interview committee, to judge. That is why you are there, and believe me, it doesn't take long to connect the dots. Companies spend huge amounts on the interview process for a reason. If someone comes in with traps the size of beer cans, and skin so thin it is translucent, there is a 90% chance that person is abusing. I'm going to give a thumbs down.

Now what about the 10% that aren't abusing, that are just that dedicated? Well, unfortunately we now have a judgement issue. Someone who is interviewing for a job that will pay them millions of dollars should have the perspective and understanding the association their looks have with known drug users, and should prepare accordingly before the interview. Lay off the tanning and cover up the muscles and tats. Companies need people to have good judgement when it comes to handing out narcotics, or landing a plane, or diagnosing a cancer. Now we are 5 minutes into the interview and all I have been thinking about is this persons tan, traps, and tats. Even if they interview well I have spent a considerable amount of time on something that I shouldn't of had to, when I should of been able to focus on their education, experience, etc. Someone with exceptional judgement would see that and avoid that distraction.

I believe this is getting oversimplified. A lawyer wears a suit, not because of low self esteem, but because it is the cultural norm. Would you trust a lawyer that wears a track suit? How about one that wears a tuxedo? How about a 3 piece pin stripped suit with monogrammed cuff links, silk handkerchief, a fur coat with a silk hat?

People wear "nice" clothes, moderate amounts of makeup, perfume, etc because that is the "norm". A moderate level of fitness is also the "norm".

Just like the lawyer, people want to "trust" their pharmacist. That means looking the part. They want someone who conforms, who is safe, who follows the rules. You want your pilot wearing a mohawk, face tats and lip piercings? Overly "ripped" and tan people give off the same vibe in an interview. It DOES set off a flag, and then you dig and see some other "issues" in their resume or interview answers, not always, but on a percentage basis it is significant. Not to be an old fart, but if you don't understand this, you will after you gain a bit more life experience. This is a 100k+ year job with peoples lives (and huge $$ risk in liability) in their hands. This stuff didn't matter at your McDonalds interview, or even a teaching job, but it does matter at this level. Choose the right path.

I don't disagree with what you're saying. However, you kind of took what we were talking about and brought it to the worst possible case. Obviously when you go to a job interview or work in general, you would never want to have tattoos, lip rings, slacks, Mohawk, etc. However, we were talking about just bulky looking dudes. I'm built like a tank on my upper body and it shows when I wear a wife beater shirt. However, when I go to job interviews and put on a buttoned down t-shirt, tie, dress pants, etc. I just look bulky up top. your premise was that I would get rejected in an interview because of that.

Not at all, and I apologize for not being more clear. I am talking about an "over the top" look, which is probably the look someone on steroids is going for (otherwise why would they be on them?). Obviously nothing wrong with being in shape. Show up super tanned, overly tight tailored shirts so you can still see the bulk (making sure people still know how ripped you are), veins popping out from your temples, bodybuilding awards/competitions mentioned on your resume, etc. Now I'm really distracted.

I also morphed into the judgement area because I was just trying to make a point to the young poster that this is a flaw in his judgment (like we all have done at several times in our lives). The mental state of anyone on steroids is questionable when compared against societal "norms", the mental state of someone on steroids who wants to be a pharmacist is exponentially worse. Kind of like an arsonist that wants to be a firefighter, or an oncologist that smokes.

Lets try this another way, if there is anything in your life that you have to come to a message board for advice on whether or not to do it, it is probably a good idea to just not do it. He knows it is a bad idea, but he needs to know it is worse than that given his field. It doesn't take long to see the effects and end result of such errors in judgment. I have seen a dozen or so and I'm not 40 yet. People from college or HS that did this or that and now their lives are "distressed" to put it kindly, It all started with this poor judgement on small things in their late teens and early 20's. People rarely change, but those that do are pretty damn sharp and motivated, even more so then people who didn't "need" to change. They have depth to them, more experience, they know both sides of this world, and can recognize it in others more easily. So this boy has great potential !!!! He just needs to calm and organize his mind.

Well you're perfectly right about that, I'm asking these types of questions on message boards to get an idea of what people say. This isn't the only forum I've asked this question, it's nice to get different perspectives.

And when you mentioned the job interview I thought you meant anybody who looked bulky even in a suit would get a no no from you. I didn't realize you were talking about people coming in with a wife beater or tight v-neck. Who does that anyways? For a serious job at least.

Edit: also I'm not gonna be posting on here anymore (this username at least), thanks for the replies guys and take care!
