Hey guys! I need some words of widsom from y’all. I’m planning on applying this upcoming cycle but want to take a summer class or two. The problem is that they are upper div classes from August 5 to September 13, so six weeks. Would it be wise to take these classes while potentially having interviews from dental school? Or should I only take one summer class during this time?

Word of caution. When you apply sometime in June/July the application can be held back until the grades from your summer course are sent to AADSAS. Some people told me that you can inform them to proceed with the application and submit the grades as an update (and resubmit new transcript) but from my experience my app was held back until Sept... It was a science course I did not need as I had the classes to fulfill all the pre-reqs. I had to call the community college to submit my grades ASAP. I am sure there's a correct way to do so just make sure your application won't get held back. Good luck!

People take hard classes during the fall while the cycle is going on as well. It depends on you. If you think you can manage it then I would take the classes. I attended 5/11 interviews and only missed 2 classes. I took zeros on 2 quizzes but they were dropped after I told them I had interviews.

Also I took summer classes and my transcript was not help back. Just don't include the summer classes on your AADSAS application. You can add them later.

I'll make sure to do this. Thank you for the advice!

I’d also second what @priceofafrica said. I took summer classes but didn’t list them until the academic update period in August and sent my updated transcripts at that time.

Curious about these statements. I've read on here that you can have prerequisites pending, and still have your application go through; is this not the case? I understand that if it is a 'recommended' course, one could simply add it to the academic update and not include it in the planned/in progress portion of the app, but that doesn't seem to make sense for a required class?

For example, I'll have all my pre-reqs, plus some recommended courses, completed by the application open date, with the exception of my Physics labs. I was planning on including these in the planned section but would love to prevent my application from being delayed, as I'd like to submit ASAP upon the cycle opening.

To be honest, your application should not be held back when you add courses as “planned”. I have friends that added courses as planned and submitted when the application opened and there was no problem.

The reason I said not to add them is because I’ve also seen numerous students on here say that their application verification was held back when they added planned courses. I am not sure of the specific reason. But if it is a pre-req I would add it. Also the majority of the schools won’t just not send you an interview because of one pre-requisite. Some schools actually have a box in the supplemental asking what’s your plan to complete pre-reqs. There are a couple schools that require your pre-reqs done before submitting but I don’t recall which ones those are

Just Stony Brook I believe.

OP, I would maybe email the professors teaching the classes you're thinking of taking and see if they would be willing to work with you missing class during interviews, because if you apply in June, chances are you could get interviews starting in July, until the cycle ends, so you could more than likely have interviews between Aug 5th-Sept 13th. If they're willing to work with you, then I see no reason why you shouldn't take those classes. Also, your application shouldn't really be held back, unless they're waiting on seeing how you end up doing (like if you have a low GPA and they want to see if you can handle upper division courses).

Also, if they're willing to work with you, I'd ask for a syllabus to reference back to when scheduling interviews - you don't want an interview the same day as a test, and knowing beforehand would keep things organized. This is because the interviews you may have in August will most likely be scheduled in June/July, so you should have some idea on how your class schedule is like (and sometimes those aren't released until just a week before class starts).

Thanks for the adivces people!

So just to clarify, if they aren’t prereq classes, then I shouldn’t add them to my app yet?

I wouldn't bother running the risk if they aren't pre-reqs. I would just add them during the academic update period when you have the grades for them
