Taking the GRE

Anyone thinking of taking the GRE as an underclassman before it switches over? I'm about to be a sophomore and I can't decide whether or not just to take the old GRE this summer for "fun" and see what I get, or wait, and take the new one in a year. I'm a pretty decent standardized test taker, so I'm not nervous about taking it and seeing what comes out of it, just curious.

I will be applying this Fall for acceptance in August 2012; so...

I am scheduled to take the GRE at the end of June. Since we will get the scores immediately, if I do not hit the scores that I needed, I will take it again in July (before I send off my application and before the August 1st date/thg new GRE version)

I can't remember where I read it, but scores on standardized tests tend to decrease after a major test change. With any test change come uncertainty: how the questions are asked... the depth of vocabulary, etc.

Remember that certain schools will require you to take either the old or new GRE. It would be advisable to confirm with the school(s) to which you are applying which GRE version they will take or which they will prefer.

This website will only provide information about the schools that PARTICIPATE in PTCAS. There are a number of schools which do not, so you will need to check with them ASAP, e.g., Texas PT schools.

I wouldn't be applying this Fall, but if I were, I would definitely take the old test. I'm just going to hold off...when I do actually apply I feel like my school will require the new GRE any ways.

I might just take both... i guess it depends on how I did the first time.

I'm applying for Fall 2012, so my application should be compiled this summer. As mentioned above my programs accept both new and old GREs. However, the new one doesn't get its scores to the schools you select to send it to for about 3 months...Do the math, take it in august, schools don't get it until Novemberish. If this is past your school's deadline your screwed.

I'm taking the "old" GRE in early July. Gotta get motivated to study though...just hard with finals going on in a week.
