Hello all,

My first two years of medical school have convinced me that I am leaning quite strongly toward a career in field research. I am particularly interested in Women's Health needs in underserved communities (international, domestic, and in disaster situations). Currently I am an OMSII in a school that has very limited options regarding research and public health involvement, and am strongly considering taking off a year to complete an intensive MPH to have that background when I reach residency selection and career options. I'm looking at either and EM or OB/Gyn residency, so taking my MPH then is not really an option.

If you have done this, or have any thoughts or advice, it would be most appreciated to hear from you!

Thanks!

I got my MPH prior to medical school so I can't give you any advice on one year programs, but I can say I loved my public health coursework. I'm an OMS-IV pursuing allopathic ob/gyn programs and I do think that having my MPH is helping me get interviews at places that have a stronger emphasis on research. I would consider applying to allopathic programs if you're pretty sure that you want to include research as a part of your career.

em and ob/gyn are both fields that u can do an mph through a prev med residency i think (look into it b/c then ur mph is covered/free). i'm doing an mph now after med school b4 residency and can say i love it, too. ppl do it in different ways (i'm in a track/dept of mostly med students or physicians at my program) - we have a med student who's taking off b/t 2nd and 3rd yr. i know ppl who also have done it after 3rd yr when u have more clinical knowledge to understand more the implics of what u learn in the mph. the majority of my trackmates though already have their degree and are either doing it the year b4 residency or after they just finished residency. its really up to u when u do it though if u can get a prev med spot, its helps not having to pay for the mph/practicum years (but each prev med program has different ways they run their prgms and some do it as a fellowship so really look into it to find out b/c they're def not the same)
