so, fasto thought he needs a change of scenery and applies to a joboffer on gaswork.com, a fulltime pain position in gresham , oregon. fasto has all the required qualifications , a preliminary phone interview with the owner of the group and the businessmanager is both professional and promising. they invite fasto to oregon and say that they will cover the interview expenses...
after taking time off work and flying to portland fasto is met by the officemanager and sees a truly stunning painclinic, well equipped, well run and obviously very profitable . the adjacent surgerycenter is similar, even with a view of mount hood. fasto sits down with the owner and two recently hired physicians. an inquiry about the fate of previous partners/physicians is met fairly evasive . the owner is busy signing checks for the surgerycenter throughout the interview which is rather superficial . after that fasto is invited to have lunch with the nurses who a have potluck for a colleague whose wife is dying of cancer . talk about both cheap and awkward...
fasto says goodbye , sends a thank you card and hears nothing for six weeks , then an email saying that they are not interested . a follow up email and phonecall requesting the promised travelexpenses remains unanswered.
as a sidenote the owner is very active in the local church...
so , you can all make your all conclusions about the current state of the jobmarket for painmanagement in attractive locations, hope to hear from other's experince too.

wow. that sucks. I guess you gotta get the reimbursement claim in writing although I assume small claims court would be more of a pain in the butt and expense than the actual reimbursement.

nah, it's not about a few hundred bucks for a plane ticket and rentalcar but rather the style (or lack thereof) of these people that irks me and led to this post...

agreed. its not alot of money, but the principle of the matter would have pissed me off and I might have seen it through if I was feeling vindictive enough.

Dude,

Take it from me...you didn't want that job...

hi drusso, can you explain why, maybe in a pm?
curious, fasto

plenty of pain jobs out there

i dont think fasto's post was about him not getting the job, its about the fact that he was told they would reimburse travel and they didnt. Take them to small claims court. or get a lawyer and sue them.

Anyway, in the future if they agree to pay for travel have them make the accomodations and pay for them

Interviews for anesthesia jobs esp private practice are more about partners feeling you out to see if you fit in and less about your competence. The era of private practice by a solo group of docs is coming to a rapid end. They really screwed it up. Thats what greed will do.

well it isn't just the travel expenses.... income is also lost by not working those days....

however, this is part of looking for other jobs.... and you can declare those expenses as deductions.

thanks maceo and tenesma for your posts, again , its not about a $400 plane ticket but really about the way they treated me : have lunch with the surgerycenters nurses at their potluck !? come on , thats low !
if somebody interviews at our place he or she gets treated at least to a sitdown dinner in a nice restaurant with all the partners , but then we are not in a big nice city on the westcoast , oh well...

Dude, I totally hear what you are saying. I had a similar experience when I interviewed at a very large pain group in Charlotte. Except I drove around to meet multiple interviewers at different clinics, was offered no lunch or follow up, and the last interviewer didn't know I was coming and didn't have my CV after I drove 30 minutes to get to the final interview. The best was when I waited for an hour to speak to one of the interviewers and this person didn't even apologize for making me wait. Then I never heard from them. Although, I am glad I didn't. It was the most disrespectful I had been treated since I was a medical student. The pain market in desirable locations is rough right now. I hope it gets better for the sake of the specialty.

i think the apparent lack of class this group showed speaks volumes about the caliber of people you would be working with as well as the work environment you would be exposed to. and i'm willing to bet that these are the sort of people who would axe you right before you made partner.

i was once told that if you let someone borrow $20 and never see them again, it should be considered money well spent.

i have to say that interviews are really hard to judge... if they treat everybody like royalty is it because they are desperate and can't find anybody? if they treat everybody like crap is it because they have 600 applications and they are sick of interviewing? or is their behavior really a reflection of who they are...

i think it can be a tiny bit of both...

Good points, but if they had that many applicants, they probably would not be offering to pay travel expenses.

everybody here has a point, but i like particularly DOme2009's take ;-))
the truth however is that if ***** were to offer me a job today (and the interview expenses ;-)) i would politely decline and consider it their loss....
