i was wondering if anyone has taken a year off, after they completed intership but before they started their anesthesiology residency. I was hoping to spend a year doing some sorta of community service event that I had been involved with in the past. How would this look to your residency program? Was it difficult getting approved, or was it disapproved? Just wondering if anyone has went down this path and had recommendations on how to bring it up to your residency program. Thanks.

We've had that request before and it really throws a kink into the programs' numbers, especially if requested at a very late time. They essentially have to find a replacement for you in that class, although putting you in the following class shouldn't be a problem.

From an educational standpoint, I wouldn't recommend it because you will lose a significant portion of your knowledge base and skills from your internship that will have to be reacquired early in your CA-1 year.

I actually have found myself in that exact situation - I am in the process of completing my internship and I have successfully matched into an advanced position for anesthesia and won't begin my CA-1 year until July/2006. Since I live in a state that allows for a permanent license after completion of an internship I am planning to moonlight in urgent care centers and whatever else I can find (or I hear from recommendations from fellow posters). I've also used my book money that my internship hospital alots me to purchase anesthesia books and I plan to read a lot during the upcoming year.

any other suggestions would be most welcome - including what other moonlighting suggestions anyone has or other things to keep my feet in medicine for the upcoming year.
