I have a genuine interest in pursuing a dermpath fellowship after derm residency with the hope of mixing patient care, dermatopathology, and research.

Is talking about an interest in Dermpath a positive or a negative? I've heard of PD and faculty not liking students for having an early interest in Mohs and wonder if the same thing applies here.

Maybe they'll wonder why not do a pathology resident than specialize? (Obv because my interest is in skin and seeing patients as well). Just wanted some feedback.

Interesting question. I would like to know the answer to this as well. I myself am interested in a peds derm fellowship. Is it a bad idea to express a strong interest in one particularly field of dermatology during the interview process?

Peds derm always get brownie points on interviews, especially if your CV reflects your interest.

Dermpath and especially surgery - not so much
Private practice only...definite no-no although you might get some appreciative comments like, "it's refreshing to hear the truth."

I tend to be in the minority on this, but I think it is always better to be honest about your interests. I was honest about my interest in surgery and but also emphasized the fact that I wanted a practice that involved both surgery and general derm patients. This is actually very common for both surg and derm path. There may be a certain group of programs that want to hear you say "my interests are research, blah blah blah" but honestly if that was the case I didn't want to go there. Also if you say you are interested in academics, research, etc but your CV doesnt really show this, then they will see through you anyway.

Just my opinion.
