Hey there,

What do people suggest one asks a POI in a phone call? I may be in this situation soon (requested one- not a cold contact, don't worry) and if they respond positively what does everyone recommend?

I have some thoughts and general standard ?s, but am not sure how much detail is appropriate?

Thanks!

FWIW, I had a few of these when I was applying (at the professor's request). Some resulted in an acceptance down the line; others didn't. All yielded valuable information. I'd really take the professor's lead in conversation and depth and always send a polite thank you follow-up email shortly afterward. Good luck! :luck:

Yes, take their lead, but I'm glad to hear you also prepped some questions. I'd probably ask what current projects they are working on and if they see themselves heading in any new directions (i.e, some profs have two main interests but are looking for students in one of those areas). You can also ask what their approach to mentoring is.
