Hey everyone, this is definitely the first time posting, I am hoping to get some help in regards to deciding between a traditional track MD at Texas A&M and an MD program at Creighton University School of Medicine.
For some background, I am older than the average entering med student by a couple years and I am a Dallas native. For me, I am at a stage where being near family is nice but not a necessity for my success and well-being in school. I am paying my living expenses which I can manage, but my parents have offered to pay tuition to either school I choose; although I know that Creighton will be a bigger hurdle for them.
I know that these forums are often broken into pros and cons list, so here it goes:
TAMU
Pros:
Schools seems to have a greater financial pool for greater resources, with nicer facilities
I know A&M pretty well it seems like a safe bet
It is cheap
If I end up in Dallas, BUMC seems like a good place
Has new facilities that look nice
Early clinical experiences
Far more diverse student and patient population
Cons:
I do not know which campus I am assigned to before having to commit
They over enrolled, but I pre-matched in October so I believe I would be safe to matriculate
I know some doctors in Dallas who have praised Creighton over A&M, and that has swayed me a little bit
College Station for a year may be a bit of a bummer, and moving twice can be stressful
If I end up outside of Dallas for my clinical years it could be tough
Splits in so many different ways (degree tracks, locations, etc.) that it is hard to determine what is possible for a traditional MD from this program (ie it is hard to analyze a match when so many people are in degree programs separate from your own
I worry that EnMed will always be the priority of the school's admin
Creighton
Pros:
Is very established
Jesuit spirit of education is very appealing to me as it pertains to the field of medicine
Has a good reputation based on what I hear
The school is pretty monolithic in degree programs and locations, so their ability to match people seems pretty sound
Their designated hospital has a residency track for every core clerkship, therefore there are always residents to provide an extra layer of instruction
Cons:
Expensive
Seems a little run-down and wanting for resources
I am not familiar with Omaha
Overall, it is very hard to tell. I am pretty confident that I would receive a Dallas assignment for TAMU since I cant imagine anyone who is more strongly tied to Dallas.
I am interested in surgical residencies, specifically Ophthalmology, so if that sways anyones advice in one way or the other I would like to put that out there.
I'm really just looking into people's opinion about what school will put out a better physician, which school sets up their students better for success, but most importantly where opportunity lies. What I mean by that is, if I as a student am motivated to take on the extra effort and truly dedicate myself to extracurricular service, research, and learning; which school is better for this kind of approach.
Thank you to whomever takes the time to help!
