Tax Breaks for Residents

How are residents not considered students? Aren't they pursuing a degree...

The 40K the hospital pays them every year is probably just a slice of what it saves from working them like mules, rather than a real "salary".

So it will just be put towards more residency spots? Residents don't get more money?

I read half awake this morning

No. They already have their M.D./D.O. Residents are not enrolled at an educational institution, they are for legal purposes employees, though the experience they are going through is educational for their profession and furthers their career.

Exactly which is why the situation is very gray and unclear. I hope the courts rule in favor of Mayo because everyone knows working 80-100 hours a week for years for 40-50k just doesn't cut it, especially with 100-250k of debt hanging over your head. 😳

Oh I agree, I think anyone considering medicine would welcome some financial help in what I would say is the most stressful segment of the career. I was just explaining the situation from a legal perspective as it stands now. Seriously though, I hope they win...residents' lives are hell enough.

If it goes in favor of Mayo, the residents won't get as much (if anything) taken out of their check, which means more money in their pocket at the end of the day.

Shouldn't your ability to get a license count as a degree 🙁

I had no idea they weren't legally counted as students.
