Hey guys doing a review on all antidepressants and anxiolytics for a psychopharm course. Most of the pubmed articles I am reading are supporting Nortriptyline over Amitriptyline due to less anticholinergic effects and less potential for hypotension and sedation. What I noticed however is that all the TCAS are pregnancy category C except Imipramine and Nortriptyline which are D. Does anyone have any idea why. Perhaps these were the 2 that were initally studdied when TCAS were thoguht to have a higher rate of limb malformations and despite more recent evidence to the contrary the categories have stuck?

Even more confusing if nortryp is the active metabolite of amitryp it would only make sense if amitryp was category d and nortryp was category c. If amitryp is category C it makes nortryp a category D so by default wouldn't that make amitryp a cateogry D.
